About Galle
Galle Fort is a living, breathing UNESCO World Heritage site situated on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. Originally founded by Portuguese navigators in 1505 and heavily fortified by the Dutch East India Company throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the fortress remains remarkably intact.
Protected by massive granite ramparts that withstand ocean waves, the interior is an enchanting maze of cobblestone lanes lined with Dutch colonial villas, coral-stone churches, artisan gem and spice boutiques, trendy gelato parlours, and ocean-facing cafes.
Sunset promenades along the Point Utrecht bastion toward the iconic white Galle Lighthouse offer tranquil views of Indian Ocean waters and local cliff divers.
