About Sigiriya
Rising dramatically nearly 200 metres above the emerald dry-zone jungle, Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is hailed as the Eighth Wonder of the World and stands as one of Asia's most sophisticated urban planning and architectural feats of antiquity.
Commissioned by King Kashyapa in the 5th century CE, the citadel complex incorporates symmetrical royal pleasure water gardens with working hydraulic fountains, ancient boulder retreats, mirror walls inscribed with early Sinhala poetic graffiti, and exquisite hand-painted frescoes of celestial maidens preserved high upon the cliff face.
Climbing through the colossal carved Lion's Paws to the summit plateau reveals royal palace foundations offering 360-degree vistas across the surrounding forest canopy and nearby Pidurangala peak.
